Who we are

The Belfast Women’s Assembly is a civic organisation calling on women from all backgrounds to have full and equal participation in preparation for new constitutional arrangements across these islands and within Europe.

The Belfast Women’s Assembly is a new development. In Northern Ireland the post-Brexit referendum saw the emergence of a range of civic engagement initiatives to consider the implications of the provision in the 1998 Agreement for a referendum on Irish unity. While women were sometimes prominent in this engagement, questions of gender justice and women’s interests were notably absent.

Beginnings

The Belfast Women’s Assembly held a public launch in February 2024, and subsequently formed a voluntary group of individual women from nationalist, unionist and other backgrounds. Today, we engage in dialogue with women across Belfast who want to discuss their constitutional futures through a feminist framework.
